Another Puzzle

For days now I’ve been seeing the same ad in the morning newspaper. It’s an ad for a particular hearing aid. The headline on the ad says “We’re looking for 42 people …” I look at that ad and go, “What?”

How did they arrive at the number 42? Do they want 42 people to call every day since the ad runs every day? Or do they want 42 people in total and so few are calling in response to the ad that they have to repeat the ad until they reach that number?

Does this ad only appear in our local paper? If it appears in other newspapers, you’d think they’d reach their magic number of 42 almost as soon as the newspaper landed on the front lawn.

Oh, well, it’s just something else to wonder about.
