Someone — maybe Robert Frost — said fences make good neighbors. I’ve been thinking about that the last few days. My thoughts have been prompted by some Lowe’s ads I’ve seen which sort of feature a white picket fence.

The sight of that fence made me think about how when I was a little girl the dream was to have a house surrounded by a white picket fence. How long has it been since you’ve seen one? I can’t remember the last one I’ve seen — other than the one in the Lowe’s ad.

In my subdivision, there are no front fences which is the land of picket fences. Fences around the back yards are wire ones in this neighborhoood. I think it’s called cyclone fencing; I’m not sure. But no one has a picket fence.

I suppose the upkeep necessary for a picket fence may be part of the reason for their demise. Scraping and painting one could be time-consuming. But I think I’d like to see one again.

What kind of fences do you have in your neighborhood?

We have block fences. They are only in the back yard. I have noticed picket fences in other areas that are made of plastic. Doesn’t sound too durable, but they don’t need painting.
