Farewell to Unknown Mentor

Jim Fox was a columnist for the Post-Dispatch and the South Side Journal during his career. He held many other positions at the Post but I “knew” him mostly as a columnist. He didn’t know it but he served as a mentor to me, especially when I tried writing some columns. He wrote about ordinary topics in a chatty way. He made stories about his dogs or eating at the neighborhood diner interesting.  He passed away Sunday.

Jim lived to 91 so he had a long life. He had some health issues in these last months. His Friend Wife passed away last summer. It somehow seems fitting that he’s gone to join her. But he will be missed, not only by his family and friends, people he knew, but by others like me who considered him a mentor and friend even though we never met face to face.
