Locally there’s been a bit of discussion about shopping on Thanksgiving. K-Mart is going to be open Thanksgiving Day and other stores are opening at various times starting as early as 6 p.m. I think. They want to get a head start on the Black Friday sales.
Seemingly, no one has any concern or consideration for the poor employees who must work on Thanksgiving instead of spending the day with their family. I would hope they would be paid overtime for working on the holiday but somehow I have my doubts about that.
I have a simple solution to the problem of the stores opening so early … just don’t go shopping. Radical, I know. But if customers would stay at home, watch the football game, play board games with the family or watch a good TV show or movie, the stores would give up opening up so early. They want to make money. To do that, they need customers. If customers don’t come, they won’t make money and will give up this silly idea.
