On the Road to Oberammergau

The travelogue at Washington University last night was “On the Road to Oberammergau.” I expected to see scenes in Germany and, more particularly, shots of the famous Passion Play. It’s only produced every 10 years so I think I’ve left it a bit late in life to see this in person.

Well, the program was not at all what I expected. Our tour started in Rome and we journeyed by bus to Florence, Vienna, and other places in Italy before crossing into Switzerland. From there it was just a short hop-skip-and jump to Oberammergau. We saw a few scenes of the town and learned that because of the sacred topic, there is no filming of the actual play. We were able to see a few shots of some rehearsals, the selection process of the actors and things like that. There are two people chosen for each major role but there are no understudies.

I came away from the program with a variety of fountains (in Italy) lurking in my memory and the lecturer’s fondness for gelato making me want some too.
