Here in the St. Louis area Lent is the time of fish fries. A number of churches have them every Friday during Lent. The Catholic churches in particular have them. The menu is fairly standard although there is some variation between congregations.
So what’s on the menu? Fried fish — could be cod or jack salmon — french fries, maybe potato salad, cole slaw, green beans, spaghetti with tomato sauce. Usually you get the fish and your choice of two of the sides. Then there’s dessert, usually baked by the women of the parish. The cost is about $7 or $8.
This morning in the paper there was a picture of a woman at one of the city churches handing a plate to a customer. Everything on it looked delicious. What really struck me though that it was being served on a china plate. Paper plates are more common.
Do you have fish fries in your area? Do you attend them? Is the menu different?
