National Day of Prayer

Today is the National Day of Prayer. Are you doing anything to observe it? I know lots of communities have prayer breakfasts but I’ve never attended one. My local church will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for anyone who wants to stop in and pray.

Last night we observed the National Day of Prayer with another congregation. Our church is in the suburbs. We were joined by a church from the city. In fact, it’s not far from our old location. We did not know these people but found them to be a very nice congregation.

At the service, we had some singing by the congregation and our youth choir sang a song but mostly we had what is called focused prayer. Someone from one or the other of the two churches prayed for a particular topic while the congregation prayed along quietly. The subjects were things like the nation, our local communities, our families, etc.

One of the members of the guest church did a short devotional I guess you’d call it at the beginning of the service and my pastor did a similar thing at the end. Both left you with something to think about.  The service concluded with prayer for one another and we were encouraged to find someone from the opposite church to pray with.

It was a nice way to celebrate the National Day of Prayer.  If you don’t have a celebration to attend, why not stop and have a time of prayer of your own.
