Missing Hugh Smith

Last night was the final concert in the summer season of the Compton Heights Concert Band. Traditionally, the soloist for this concert is Hugh Smith, a wonder operatic tenor. Lucy, the announcer for the band, calls him The Fourth Tenor.

He has a beautiful voice and seems equally at home singing opera, light operettas or even pop music. St. Louis has adopted him as one of their own. He seems just as happy to come here as we are to have him come.

I was really looking forward to attending that concert. However, the temp at concert time was something like 97 with a heat index of 109. Even though the humidity reading was only 53, there was no way I would venture out. Not even hearing Hugh sing “be my own …” was worth going out in the heat.

I miss him. Maybe I’ll be able to scrap the funds together to attend the Christmas concert which is held in Powell Hall and is a ticketed event. I need a Hugh Smith fix before next summer, that’s for sure.
