I found some unexpected delights at the library the other day. The first thing I noticed is that the coffeeshop is open again.
When our new library was built a few years ago, it included space for a coffee shop. It’s a small space with just a few tables in front. The menu is limited to coffee and soft drinks with a few sandwiches for a light lunch. Sadly, after several months, the coffeeshop closed. Supposedly, the owners said they couldn’t make any money.
Well, the problem may have been they were never open when I was at the library. I went at various times of day but no one was ever in the coffeeshop. Seems obvious to me that if you want to make money from a coffeeshop, then you must open the shop so customers can buy the coffee. Then, the shop was empty and stood that way for months.
So it was a very pleasant surprise to see new people behind the counter. I treated myself to lunch in an effort to encourage their business. It’s so nice to be able to enjoy a drink while reading a book you just can’t wait until you get home to open.
Another delight was a flyer on the bulletin board announcing some senior citizen exercise classes. These are run by our county health department and meet twice a week. All exercises are done while sitting in a chair.
Several years ago I took some chair aerobics classes at a community center and enjoyed them. However, my schedule changed and I was no longer able to attend. I’ve missed them. It now appears that similar classes have come to the library which is much closer to my house than that community center. I’m looking forward to the joining them the first week in September.
Did I find books by the authors I was interested in? Sadly, no. I found only one of the four authors I was curious about on the shelves. I tried to check the online library catalogue to see if perhaps they were at one of the other branches. No, they don’t seem to be a part of our library system. Next step will be to try to get one of their books through inter-library loan.
But while I ponder doing that, I’ll enjoy coffee and exercise at the library along with good reading materials.
