Today is a grey, overcast day. It really looks wintery although the temperature is about 50, I think, so it doesn’t really feel wintery. The forecast says we’re to get a mix of rain and snow later today so that will definitely feel and look like winter. Days like this are good for curling up with a good book.
Currently I’m reading Frances Mayes’ A Year in the World. You may know this author from her book Under the Tuscan Sun. In my current book, she and her husband are traveling “in the world.” I haven’t gotten very far yet so I’m not sure how much of the globe they explore. But the book starts with their traveling to Spain. What a joy it was to read their impressions of cities I visited when I was in Spain. Their experiences brought back many happy memories of that trip.
Now they are in Portugal and although I didn’t travel as much there, their accounts of the Alfama in Lisbon brought back memories of the streets so narrow you could touch the house walls on either side of them — and not have your arms fully extended.
I’m sure I’m going to enjoy the rest of this book. It’s a book to be savored and enjoyed in sips, not gulps. Today is a good day to join Frances on her travels and explore another town, another region.
