Saturday night I attended the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra concert. The program had a Chinese flavor to it in preparation for the orchestra playing at a Chinese festival in New York this week.
The second number was “Water Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra” by Tan Dun. Watching the stagehands set up for this was very [...]

Grand Center Is the Place

Last weekend the place to be was Forest Park. This week the place to be is Grand Center in St. Louis.
There’s a heavy musical overtone to my weekend. It started Thursday evening when I went to a Town Hall meeting held by the St. Louis Symphony. Information concerning finances, programming and such things were given [...]
Senior Seminars

The local community college system offers a series of Senior Seminars at this time of the year. The topics vary widely. The programs are held at an area church and usually draw a nice crowd of senior citizens, heavy on the ladies of course but a few men also venture out. The morning starts with a coffee/donut [...]
A Grand Finale

Last night was the final concert in the summer concerts performed by the Compton Heights Concert Band. It was, in my opinion, the best program of the season.
The music was a nice mix of things. Because Hugh Smith, tenor, was the soloist, some were from opera, some were from operettas and some were more pop [...]
Guild Election Results

As I mentioned in my last post, Saturday was the day of the Knitters’ Guild election. As I suspected would happen, my preferred candidate for the two contested offices was not elected. So I just hope the reservations and concerns I have about the people who were elected to fill those positions prove to be groundless. [...]
Playing Ragtime Piano

For a number of years I’ve wanted to learn to play ragtime piano. I have played the piano for years but just not ragtime. So before Christmas I ordered a book of easy ragtime arrangements with the idea that I’d practice and achieve my long-standing goal.
Alas, I’m making no progress. The reason is simple … [...]

Earlier this week a friend invited me to attend the performance of Godspell being put on by the students of a community college about 30 to 45 minutes drive away. Last night we went. Neither one of us had ever seen Godspell so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. We learned it was based [...]
I hear music …

Last Thursday evening I attended a free concert played by the St. Louis Symphony. It was held in Forest Park. The temporary bandstand was erected next to the Grand Lagoon at the bottom of Art Hill. The audience set in their lawn chairs or on blankets on the hill. Many brought picnic suppers to eat. [...]
What do you know about harmonicas?

The local community college is sponsoring a series of seminars for senior citizens. These are held in a large Methodist church in one of the suburbs where a branch of the college is located. You could sign up for the entire series or just cherry pick the ones which interest you. I did the latter.
The [...]
A blast from the past

A few months ago, KMOX-AM (1120 on the radio dial) started a new program at 8 p.m. on Saturday evening called Route 66. During this five-hour period, music is played. This is a little unusual because normally KMOX is a talk radio station with a heavy emphasis on sports. I’m not quite sure how they [...]
