Today is the day I have a mini vacation. I enjoy listening to A Prairie Home Companion on the local NPR station. I would love to go to St. Paul, MN, and see a live production of it. Alas, my budget won’t cover that this year.
But, Garrison Keillor is bringing the show to St. Louis [...]

A Protective Modem Mother
Posted in Uncategorized on May 28, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
After having at least two modems fried by lightening which traveled on the phone wire, I now routinely unplug the phone line to the computer whenever we have thunderstorms or even the threat of a storm. That means that my computer has been disconnected from the Internet more than it’s been connected this week.
Modems aren’t [...]
A Stew of Topics

Just as a stew is made up of a variety of ingredients, all cooked together to make a savory dish, this post is made up of a variety of topics. Whether or not the result is a savory mix is up to you, Blog Reader.
Evidently watering the lawn does work like washing the car. We [...]
Does it work like washing the car?

When I was growing up, the folk wisdom was if you wanted it to rain, you washed the car … or in my family, polished your shoes. I’m wondering if watering the lawn works the same way.
I had my yard treated for moles and was advised to water the yard at least once or twice [...]
Spring Brings New Life

My route to my weekly knitting group takes me past a couple of golf courses. It is not uncommon to see duck or geese on what I suppose is properly called a water hazard.
This week, though, I saw something I hadn’t seen before … little goslings following their parents. I’ve no idea where [...]
A Novel in Letters

Years ago I read a book, 84 Charing Cross Road, which told a story through letters. The letters were written by a woman in New York, if I remember it correctly, and a used book seller in London, England. The entire story was contained in their correspondence.
I was fascinated by this book, so much so [...]
What’s a letter?

One of my hobbies is writing letters. Several months ago my name was listed in an English penpal magazine as someone looking for new pen friends. As a result, several people wrote to me. I responded to them but it’s too early to tell yet who will become a friend and who will not.
One woman [...]
JIT Sweater Graciously Received

The baby sweater I completed two days before receiving the invitation to the baby shower has been given. I washed it in Suave shampoo, lavendar scented, by hand and then tried to dry it in my dryer. However, it was so heavy with water (thanks to arthritis in my hands preventing squeezing it thoroughly) that [...]
Getting Some Culture

Friday, after the OASIS luncheon, I went to the Art Museum to view the “Power and Glory: Court Arts of China’s Ming Dynasty” exhibit. I had been wanting to see this but the Art Museum isn’t on my regular traffic pattern so I hadn’t gotten around to it yet. However, the hotel where the luncheon [...]
OASIS Luncheon

Yesterday was the annual OASIS luncheon. There are over 2,000 OASIS volunteers so it’s no wonder that you have to be quick with your RSVP to get to attend this luncheon. There must be close to 900 people there. This year the focus was on the reading tutors, although they have volunteers who work in [...]
